Three Palimpsests for Daphne Marlatt
by Steven Ross Smith
ii
sudden
prayer apparent at a lip's (as if
slipped)
moist words
canny sun
shines or shuns (as if
to challenge)
branching oxygen machines
stand steady on stern trunks (as if
they know
themselves)
offering - air, whisper
to vaporous unpredictable clouds (as if
un-cloaking,
the prayer) opens
a shelter of leaves (crackle)
a weave of wool (chafes the neck)
a gold-rush (in the chest)
or lances an ache's crush
from lungs to mouth-chamber
over lips
a current of air (as if)
involuntary
song
