House Rules
by Kent Bruyneel

When I was younger and had not done the things I have done since, been the same places, I could walk around Coquitlam and love every stone of it. As I became a man I grew a profound hate for its normalcy, its treatment of me. Prince Edward Island.

In PEI I re-discovered love universal. Red. Then, as these things go, I grew to hate it there too. But not so much its people or their treatment of me; but rather my treatment of them and it. Shame.

But now, in an idling blue convertible 200 yards from Centenniel Senior Secondary and the Coquitlam Rec. Centre — half way in between — I am in love again.

When we started this thing, Mike and I, it was never about the money. It can't ever be. And it all feels just right.

I love PEI now, from so far away, but even more than that, I know I love this place. Where my feet move easiest and free. In black slip on shoes.

Kent Bruyneel is not afraid anymore, not at all. No. No really.
